Can You Claim COVID-19 Tests on your Tax Return?

Written by Bryan Petersen, Chief Virtual Accountant

Personal tax season is coming.

For us, it starts March 1st. The first day to file your 2021 personal tax return in Canada is February 21, 2022.

That leads us into the topic of this short blog. We’ve been getting a lot of questions in our office recently about whether or not you can claim COVID-19 tests on your tax return.

And the answer is…maybe.

We've done our research. We've talked to the Canadian Revenue Agency. We've read other articles, and we’ve listened to the CRA's interpretations.

The only way that you can get your COVID-19 tests to be claimable as a medical tax credit is to have a prescription. That prescription has to be in writing, and that prescription has to be from somebody in the field that has the authority to write you that prescription. In this case, that would be a doctor, nurse, dentist, etcetera.

It is worth noting that this is not the case with some other medical expenses - only for tests. For a complete listing visit:

If you were planning on claiming your COVID-19 tests, “tests” would be where they would fit underneath.
