This year is a special year for accountants in that we get an extra few days to file tax returns.
April 30th lands on a Saturday, and according to the laws of the income tax act, if a due date ends on a weekend or federal statutory holiday, then those things aren't due until the next business day. April 30th is a Saturday, and May 2nd is Monday, and that is the day the tax returns are actually due.
I don't suspect my office will be filing things last minute. We've been successful in the last half a decade not doing that. For any accountants out there that use that final day, you are in luck.
It is an accountant’s unicorn year. Very exciting!
If you're a procrastinator like myself with your own taxes, and April 30th comes and you say to yourself, ‘Crap, I didn't file my taxes!’, then maybe those last couple of days are going to be good for you.
You got two extra days, so take your Saturday, your Sunday, your bottle of wine, and do your taxes.
